Studies show that the diet that was supposed to help lower a person's blood pressure can actually reduce their risk of heart attacks and stroke. Researchers who studied the dining habits of almost 89,000 women over a period of 24 years have concluded that those who routinely stayed close to the DASH diet (Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension ) were at significantly less risk for heart attacks and stroke than the women in the study who deviated the most from the DASH guidelines.
Women who were non-smokers, exercised and had an overall healthy lifestyle were the healthiest. One of the researchers said "Our study provides, to our knowledge, the strongest evidence to date on the long-term benefits of the DASH diet in the primary prevention of CVD among healthy subjects".
The DASH diet is many a diet rich in fruits, vegetables and low in fat
